Solar energy in Makkah

Makkah is hot most of the year, with many hotels and serviced apartments, commercial buildings and offices, warehouses on the outskirts, and residential districts that often climb the hillsides. So any solar request here starts with a practical question: how much of the consumption can the available roof actually cover?

SaudiSolar doesn’t sell or install anything. You send one request with your type of building and approximate consumption, and with your consent we pass it to qualified solar installers serving Makkah so you can compare quotes on the same basis.

Hotels, businesses and homes in Makkah

Most requests in Makkah come from these kinds of sites:

  • Hotels and serviced apartments

Round-the-clock cooling, large volumes of hot water and occupancy that rises and falls with the seasons. The roof is usually small for the load, so solar water heaters may bring a clearer benefit than panels. More on solar for hotels.

  • Commercial buildings and offices

Shops, offices and centres using power by day, which suits a rooftop system if there is enough unshaded space.

  • Warehouses on the outskirts

Supply, cold storage and distribution warehouses with wide roofs — among the best places for panels in the city.

  • Homes on hillsides

Villas and houses on sloping plots, sometimes with harder roof access, needing a careful look at shade, mounting and wind.

Where the case is clearest in Makkah

Businesses with daytime use and wide roofs, such as warehouses and low-rise commercial buildings, come closest to a good case. Tall hotels have little roof space for their consumption, so the realistic goal is part of the load, plus solar carports where there is room.

For homes, residential electricity in Saudi Arabia is relatively cheap, so savings alone can take many years for a house with a small bill. The case is stronger with a high summer bill or a need for backup power. Try the solar calculator before deciding.

Makkah sun and heat

The sun in Makkah is strong almost all year and winters are warm compared with Najd, so solar production is available on most days. But high temperatures lower panel efficiency slightly, and inverters need a shaded, ventilated spot, especially on exposed roofs.

Dust lowers output until panels are cleaned, and in hillside districts mountains or neighbouring buildings can shade a roof in the morning or afternoon. A good survey studies that shade instead of assuming a roof in full sun all day. See our guide to dust, heat and cleaning.

Solar in Makkah: common questions

Can panels power a whole hotel?

Usually not. A hotel roof is small compared with its cooling and hot-water use. The realistic goal is part of the daytime load, together with solar water heating.

My home is on a hillside — can panels go on it?

Usually yes, but the survey has to check shade from the hill and nearby buildings, how equipment gets onto the roof and how strong the mounting is. Don’t rely on a quote based on photos alone.

The building is leased — can I install a system?

You will usually need the owner’s written consent, especially for grid connection. Mention it in your request.

How do I check an installer is qualified?

Ask for the commercial registration, electrical licence and proof of qualification for grid connection, and check them yourself. We only send requests to qualified installers; the contract is between you and the installer.
