Solar power for hotels

A hotel never sleeps: room and corridor cooling, hot water, laundry, kitchens and lifts run all day. That means a large bill — but also that solar panels will only cover part of it, especially in towers with small roofs. In many hotels the clearest place to start is hot water.

Send one request with your type of hotel, city and bills, and with your consent we pass it to qualified solar installers so you can compare their quotes calmly.

A hotel’s energy profile

Cooling is the biggest load, and it runs day and night because guests are mostly in their rooms in the evening and at night. Solar power produced during the day is almost all used inside the hotel, but it covers a smaller share of daily consumption than in a building that only operates by day.

The second load many forget is water heating: bathrooms, in-house laundry, kitchens and sometimes the pool. If water is heated electrically, solar water heaters can be a quicker and clearer step, needing less space than panels for the same effect on that part of the bill.

Seasonality matters too: hotels in Mecca and Medina follow the Hajj, Umrah and Ramadan seasons, while Taif and Abha follow the summer. Send occupancy data with your bills — it explains the swings in consumption.

Roofs: tight on towers, generous at resorts

A city-centre tower hotel has a small roof relative to its floors, already taken up by water tanks, AC units and lift rooms, sometimes a rooftop pool or restaurant. Be realistic here: the system will be relatively small, and the case depends on every usable square metre.

Resorts, low-rise hotels and serviced apartments on the edge of town have larger roofs, and sometimes land and car parks. Concrete roofs allow ballasted frames, but the waterproofing and roof load need checking, and panels shouldn’t spoil the look of the hotel or guests’ views.

If the hotel is leased from an owner or run by an operator, settle who makes the decision and who benefits from the savings before requesting quotes.

Carports

Tower hotels usually park in the basement, so there is no room for canopies. At resorts, roadside hotels and serviced apartments with open parking, solar carports add production space and comfort for guests returning to their cars in the midday heat. They can also be prepared for EV chargers, which some guests ask about.

Backup power at a hotel

Hotels need continuous power for safety systems, lifts and emergency lighting, and usually have a standby generator subject to safety requirements. A grid-connected solar system doesn’t replace it and disconnects during an outage. Batteries can help for specific loads such as reception, booking systems and networks, but they won’t run a whole hotel’s cooling. Any battery installation in a building with guests needs particular care over safety and location.

If you have a generator, ask the installer to explain in the offer how the solar system works alongside it: whether it shuts down automatically when the generator runs, and how it is isolated safely. That is technical work for a licensed electrical engineer, but having it in writing shows the design reflects how the hotel really operates, not only the ideal case.

What to include in your quote request

  • 12 months of bills, with monthly occupancy rates if possible.
  • Number of rooms and the current water-heating method (electric, diesel, gas), and whether laundry is in-house.
  • Roof drawings with tank and equipment positions, and any land or open parking.
  • A single-line diagram if available, and the subscription capacity.
  • Ownership and operation: owner, tenant or management company.

Ask installers to separate panels and solar water heating in the quote, so you can see the effect of each. Try the solar calculator, and read about cost factors and whether solar is worth it.

Solar for hotels: common questions

Our hotel is a tower with a small roof. Is solar worth it?

The system may be small with a limited effect on the bill. Start by looking at solar water heating, which is often the clearer case here.

Will panels affect the look of the hotel?

On a flat roof they usually can’t be seen from the street. Ask the installer for a drawing showing the layout and height.

Can solar cover night-time cooling?

Not without batteries, and batteries at this scale rarely make sense. The system reduces daytime consumption; nights stay on the grid.

Do I need the owner’s consent?

If the building is leased, usually yes, in writing. Clarify it before requesting quotes.
